About Imam
Imam Asim Shareef is the leader of the East Austin Community of Al-Islam. He teaches Islamic Studies, Arabic, leadership development, and da’wah training. A native of Houston, Texas, he studied at American Open University and the Islamic Learning Institute. Imam Asim began as a community organizer while serving as Assistant Imam for Houston Masjid of Al-Islam for six years and as Imam for Masjid
An-Nur for two years.
He has worked with Austin Energy, Austin Environmental Network, Exxon, Reliant Energy, and he currently works in sales for Toyota. Imam Asim values the relationships he’s forged with leaders on the local, state, and regional levels. He often lectures in Islamic centers, churches, synagogues, schools, and universities across the country, and appears on local and national radio and television discussing
Al-Islam, the importance of interfaith collaboration, and other key social issues.
Under his leadership, the Economic Empowerment Initiative formed in 2013 addresses unemployment for men and women ages 18 to 30. This program teaches business development and builds new competitive careers skills for young entrepreneurs.
It is Imam Asim’s mission to share how anyone can benefit from the excellence of Al-Islam. He works with interfaith groups on using scriptures to serve humanity, promote religious awareness and tolerance, and foster environmental stewardship. He also collaborates with diverse groups to address hunger, creating healthy families, youth development, social inequality, and the successful reintegration of ex-offenders into society. His main motivation is to help ensure that the human soul and human family reaches its G-d given potential.
